Changes for Challenging Times A Special Report of the 2008-2009 Survey on Business Conditions and Actions

Organizations and people now face the challenges of serious economic conditions. The Wilson Group conducted a survey in late November 2008 to determine how companies are responding to these challenges. Over 140 companies with a major presence in New England responded to questions that addressed what they have implemented in 2008 and are considering for 2009. We asked about their projections for business conditions as well as the level of anticipated pay increases, bonus payouts, and equity awards as a reflection of these conditions. Much has been said in the media about significant cost and staff reductions, and we wanted to know in more concrete terms where and what is happening.

Wellness programs are designed to improve the life-styles and knowledge of employees to promote healthy living. When offered with a Consumer-Driven Health Plan (CDHP), wellness programs try to balance out the incentives provided to avoid certain medical services to save up Health Reimbursement Account (HRAs) dollars. These programs have the potential to reduce healthcare expenditures even when offered without a CDHP. If effective techniques are employed, they could improve the overall level of health in the workplace that they are offered. With the ability to decrease absenteeism, increase productivity and decrease healthcare expenditures, wellness programs have the potential for a large return on investment to employers when administered productively. As healthcare costs continue to increase at a rate higher than the economic growth of the U.S. economy many employers are faced with difficult decisions about how to provide health benefits for their employees. Therefore, employers are searching to find ways to keep the costs of providing benefits to their employees down while still providing benefits packages that are sufficient and competitive with the rest of the marketplace. An increasingly popular theory is that if patients acted more like consumers in choosing their healthcare, they would be more prudent in their spending and use of health related services.
